Amidst rising authoritarianism, political instability, and compounding environmental crises, women and girls consistently stand at the frontlines of democratic resilience. Yet, their essential contributions remain chronically overlooked.
Conservative cultural tropes, patriarchal structures, and restrictive contexts for gender equality continuously reinforce their marginalisation from public and political life. Furthermore, mainstream democracy-strengthening efforts frequently fail to center feminist discourses, treating gender equality as an afterthought rather than a fundamental prerequisite for democratic success.
DemocraSHE emerges from the urgent feminist need to correct this narrative. It situates visibility as a radical act, recognizing that until the intersectional realities of women defenders are acknowledged, the region’s democratic frameworks will remain fragile and incomplete.

DemocraSHE is a multimedia storytelling and advocacy initiative. It spotlights featuring women and women-led organisations actively defending and redefining democracy across the Globe with a focus on Global Minority and the EuroMed region.
Center Women in Democracy Discourse: To actively shift the paradigm of regional democracy activism by demonstrating how gender inequalities undermine democratic outcomes, and by inserting a necessary feminist framework into mainstream democracy-building solutions.
Expose Intersectional Marginalisation: To uncover the deeper, complex layers of discrimination facing women and girls, specifically focusing on underserved, peripheral, and non-urban contexts. We will highlight how geographical isolation, age, cultural biases, and external crises (like climate change) intersect to impact their civic participation.
